3 Days in The Northern Kingdom
by lisafischoff
“‘Cause it’s a good night
To be out there soakin’ up the moonlight
Stake out a little piece of shoreline
I’ve got the perfect place in mind
It’s in the middle of nowhere only way to get there
You got to get a little mud on the tires”.
-Brad Paisley When I got back to New York last night, I discovered Bon Appetit Magazine just released an article that essentially highlights everywhere I went this past weekend. It just so happens it was also written by Nathalie Jordi, the founder of People’s Pops who also sells at The Market. The local food and farming world is quite a small one. Go figure.
At any rate, The Northern Kingdom consists of a handful of towns including but not limited to St. Johnsbury, Greensboro, Hardwick, Glover, West Glover and Craftsbury. This past weekend was a nice little get-away to rural Vermont where we learned about the cheese made at Jasper Hill Farm and aged in The Cellars at Jasper Hill…
Ate fondue with friends…

Did some cross country skiing in Craftsbury Commons…

Went sugaring at Ledgenear Farms with old friends and new (it was opening weekend!)…
[Those definitely are homemade donuts dipped in fresh warm maple syrup. I recommend you do this immediately.]
Visited a fairly new (and already well known and highly praised) craft beer brewery to taste the beers. I brought home a growler of Ephraim which is currently rated the #1 IPA in the country…

Stayed in a beautiful empty inn courtesy of Scott and Kathy Donnelly and Jasper Hill Farm (we had the entire gorgeous place to ourselves!)…

Took a detour through Waitsfield for brunch on our way home…
Learned the true meaning of “mud season”. The bottom picture doesn’t even begin to show just how dirty my car really is. Also, my tires now seriously need to be balanced and rotated…and aligned. Those were some SERIOUS ruts in the muddy dirt roads.
Places not to miss in The Northern Kingdom: Jasper Hill Farm/The Cellars at Jasper Hill (Greensboro) Hill Farmstead Brewery (Greensboro) The Lakeview Inn (Greensboro) Craftsbury Outdoor Center (Craftsbury Commons) Parker Pie (West Glover) Elmore Mountain Bread (Elmore) The Green Cup (Waitsfield)
